Chapter One

The Secret is Out

Kristyn was no ordinary girl. She had dance moves. She knew how to cook and even how to fight. The weirdest thing about Kristyn was she lived in the unicorn world. What happened is when she was little, a worm hole happened crossing Earth and the Unicorn Universe and she and a baby unicorn had switched places.

She was raised as if she was a unicorn from the start. The baby unicorn was sent to Earth, raised as a human. Of course its real parents were worried about her but they loved Kristyn as their very own. They even bought her a horn so she could fit in at school.

“When are we going to tell her the truth?” Her dad unicorn asked, as she was showing her friend some dance moves.

“Do we have to tell her she is adopted?” Her mom unicorn asked. “Surely, she knows she is different. But we love her. What if she wants to try to find her real family?”

“We need to love her enough and help her if that is what she wants.”

“But Earth is a dangerous place. Humans hunt down there. It hurts to imagine how our real baby was raised.”

“Shh, she will hear you.” Her dad peeked in his adopted daughter’s bedroom. He saw her dancing and what they were afraid of what would happen, did! Her horn had fallen off.

“Oh., no. Her horn fell off!” He was about to burst into his daughter’s room to explain to see how her friend would react to not having a real horn but her mom unicorn stopped him.

“Let’s see how she handles it,” she nudged his horn gently, snuggling up to him.

“Your horn .it fell off!” Her … friend squealed. “Are you okay?” Her name was Heartly and she had hearts on her side. She always wondered why Kristyn wore clothes covering up her marks but maybe this is why.

“Yeah, it is a false one. I was born without a horn.” Kristyn explained. “Wow, you wear a falsie. That is so cool.” Her friend shook her pink mane and wondered if it would hurt without her horn.

Her parents sighed relief and felt guilty for spying on their daughter and continued their conversation elsewhere.

“Hey, maybe you aren’t a unicorn at all. Maybe you’re a horse!” She squealed. She had read tales of such creatures, they looked just like unicorns but they had no horn.

“I think I am a human,” she whispered, afraid that her parents would hear.

“A human? But how can that be?” She never had seen a human but she had heard scary tales of them. They inhabited Earth. The Unicorn Universe was dimensions away and it held their planet Unicon.

“I have been studying and the night I was born, you can see right here there was an astronomical event. I think me and my parent’s real baby switched places.”

She showed her the plans she drew up. It seemed all the signs added up. It was an event called Stardust where the dimensions lined up parallel from one another making Unicon and Earth align. It happened every eleven years and the first one she believed she experienced was when she was born. And now as her birthday drew close, there would be another. Stardust

“But .but …”

“They don’t know I know but look at me. I don’t look like a unicorn.” Kristyn said.

“Well, you’re still my friend, though.” Heartly told her.

“Thank you, I would hate if I lost our friendship. But will you keep it a secret?”

“Of course. It is between us, Kristyn,” Heartly giggled. It would be fun sharing something like that! That was one big secret!

“There is more ..”

Heartly looked at her friend., expectantly.

“I am going to try to find a way to Earth and meet my real family. I mean I love my parents but I just want to know where I come from..”

Heartly was going to protest. “But it might be dangerous. There is sickness there and wars.”

They read it in their unicorn history book about other planets. The Unicorn Universe was dimensions away from the Milky Way but there were time glitches where it made traveling to the other universe possible. Mars and Earth had the most wars and she did not want her friend to go there.

“You know I know jujitsu. Our self defense instructor taught us. But I will be careful. I don’t think they have war all the time. But I will be prepared.” She did a fighting stance to show her friend.

“Do you want me to come, too?” Heartly was hoping she would say no.

“I’d love for you, too, but just in case there is war, I am going to take Bravely with me. He is used to danger. You know he was all ready to join the military but they told him he was too young.”

“Have you told him yet?”

“Not exactly. I told him I was planning a mission and needed backup..”

“What did he say?”

“You know Bravely. He said when and where.” Bravely was Heartly’s cousin and just like his name, he was definitely brave.

“I am going to tell my parents I am spending the night with you and then, Bravely and I are going to go to the laboratory.”

“But ..what if we get in … trouble .what if they found out?”

“Please, Heartly ..”

“Of course. You know I will,” Heartly sighed, admitting defeat. “Are you actually going to Earth? How will you get back?”

“I have to know. I have to find answers. What if I am human? That means I belong on Earth, doesn’t it?”

“But .but …”

“Don’t worry; I will figure out a way to come back. I can’t leave my family and my best friend forever.”

“You promise you will come back?”

“Definitely.” She reached over and hugged her friend. This was going to be an adventure like none other but she had to know, didn’t she?

They hushed when her mom brought them in a tray of snacks. She carried the plate in her mouth, plopping it on her daughter’s bed. “Thought you girls might want some snacks.”

“Thank you, Mom. You’re the best.” She hugged her mom tight as she thanked her, remembering she was about to leave the only home she had known.

“Mom, I was wondering if I could spend the night at Heartly’s Friday?”

“But Kristyn, that is your birthday! I want you with me that day!”

“I will still be at home for most of the day; besides the guest of honor needs to be at her own birthday party.”

“Oh, okay,” she sighed. She didn’t like Stardust was coming up again. What if she lost Kristyn this time? She already had lost her firstborn to this event. But she figured she would be okay over at Heartly’s. Kristyn was always getting into mischief but Heartly was a good influence on her. All of her friends thought of Heartly as a goody goody so surely she would keep Kristyn out of trouble.

Meet The Author

Tonya Christine Hewitt

I have wanted to be a writer ever since I was 8 years old. I grew up a Navy brat, moving around A LOT! I lived on the navy base in Norfolk, Va, Groton, Ct, Mobile, Al and probably numerous other states as well, so it was hard making friends, being as shy as I was. I did have a close friend in Norfolk named Jennifer. We became friends because just like my characters in Different Colored Dreams we had the same lunch box of Rainbow Brite. We were huge fans of the cartoon. But then, once, again I had to move.

But we moved to Cleveland, TN and that is where my grandparents and cousins lived. I started going to Hopewell Elementary and I got to stay long enough where I had a favorite teacher, Mrs. Armour. She read us books from Judy Blume and E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. She introduced me to my love of books. My dad finally retired and we got to stay here!

But it was not till my teacher took us to the library for reading time, we got to listen to the librarian read us a book. This was no ordinary book. It was a 12 year old girl who wrote her dad a story for being in the army. I felt a connection to her. This girl was four years older than me but I felt I could write a book, even at my young age. I was hooked. I read and wrote all I could. I was determined to accomplish my dream. I promised my mom I would dedicate my first book to her and that I did. A Mystical Journey, the first book I ever self-published, came out in 2009 and six years later, I reformatted it and then, I felt like I had to write all I could!

God gave me my talent and inspires me each and every day and blesses me with so much. My mom will always be my number one fan but sadly, she passed away in 2013. Many books I have written are dedicated to her memory. Lots of my ideas come from wanting to make presents for people and seeing them smile from the story I have written. The words always seemed rather magical to me and I love that writing can take me wherever imagination roams.

I co-write a series with my best friend, Trisha King under the pen name Larissa Moon. We love that you stopped by our site to find out more about us and our writing!
